with October being our Unofficial Castlevania Month in terms of virtual console, I got to reflecting back on the NES Vania games, while listening to Bloodlines Theme of Simon. I got to thinking how did these games manage to grab our attention like they did? it is pretty impressive when you think about it. playing Simons quest or Draculas curse, you were never really considering how mind blowing the graphics were, (at least I wasnt). my 7 -8 year old brain just kinda thought, oh theres a skeleton, Ill whip it! and my imagination pretty much took care of the rest. I remember reading the game manuals and getting a feel for the story, and the game itself was pretty much the journey, or more so the vehicle for that journey. The graphics were no where near what they are today, but somehow the games managed to create this coherent and immerseive world that we all liked to delve into, and save from the Clutches of Dracula and the rest of the creatures of the night. even though I can finish it in about an hour and I know every secret, I still get a thrill traversing the Veros woods in Simons quest and hearing Bloody Tears. embarrassingly enough I dont consider them as often as I should with the series, but the NES Castlevanias were amazing hall marks in the history of Gaming.
