"Candide" is a great excuse for fun, music and silliness at the theatre. The Main Street Theatre Company’s “Candide" with book by Hugh Wheeler based on the novel by Voltaire, Music by Leonard Bernstein, Lyrics by John LaTouche and Stephen Sondheim. This version of “Candide” is fast, sarcastic, humorously inappropriate, colorful and did we mention fun? Standout performances by Tony Rossi as the ever changing narrator (Voltaire)/Pangloss/Govenor and more, he mixes the right amount of energy with his expertly crafted characters and voices throughout the show. Jessica Mennella’s “Old Lady” is a comical wonder that sings and dances her way to scene stealing crescendo. The magical mix of “Candide” and Cunegonde played by Joey MacCabe and Amy Suznovich, respectively, are wonderfully voiced, classically trained performers who take their characters to the edge of absurdly profound innocence, with a wink and a smile poking fun at politics, love and theatre itself. The supporting cast of Mark J. Bracken Jr. as Cunegnde’s brother Maximillian and Dawn Gaylardo as Paquette lend their excellent voices, broad humor and laughs to the four young intrepid voyagers on this raucous romp around the world. “Candide” features a ensemble of 23 multi-generational actors who each play multiple roles in the production. There are multiple stages, ramps, platforms over 120 colorful and imaginative costumes, pygmies, singing sheep, hangings, slayings, dancing Spanish Dons and executioners, lust, love, hope and a nine piece orchestra! “Candide’s” music is iconic. It has arguably the most memorable overture in theatre history and one of the finest finales ever to be performed acapella, in 5 part harmony…..how can you miss this Best of All Possible Musicals? “Candide” has its two final performances Friday 6/14 and Saturday 6/15 at 8:00 pm at the Main Street Theatre Company , 3018 Bordentown Ave, Parlin, NJ 08858.
