Even though I work in television, I still find that in many cases pictures are just as powerful, if not more powerful, than video. These pictures are from the website NYmeta. They picked 75 pictures that they say define the 21st century so far. For this post I used 5 of them. The first picture is from September 11, 2001. This was President Bush’s reaction when he learned that a second plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. He was reading to students at an elementary school in Florida when he got the word. The look on his face is something I will never forget. (Courtesy Life) The second picture is from 2007. That’s Terri Gurrola being reunited with her daughter after serving in Iraq for 7 months. Ive covered so many reunions like this. They never get old. (Courtesy Buzzfeed) The third picture is of US Air Flight 1549 in 2009. Pilot Sully Sullenberger had just taken off from an airport in New York when he lost power after running into a flock of Geese. He was forced to make an emergency landing right in the middle of the Hudson River. Incredibly every one survived. The fourth picture is from 2013. That’s 25 year old Lesleigh Coyer laying down in front of the grave of her brother. Staff Sgt. Ryan Coyer served with the 75th Ranger Regiment in both Iraq and Afghanistan. His sister said simply: “He was a great man and I was honored to be his sister.” (Courtesy Reuters) And finally that last picture is from November 15, 2013. Thousands and thousands of people came out to see the Batkid save Gotham City. (Which looked a whole lot like San Francisco) The Batkid was 5 year-old Miles Scott. He was battling leukemia. It is now in remission. His mom said: “He likes to be a superhero. He is one. He beat an awful disease.” (Courtesy Raphael Kluzniok) All of these pictures bring back so many memories. Some good. Some bad. Please feel free to share your thoughts. Where you were at the time. What you remember. Or feel free to post pictures that you think should also be on the list. Again these are just 5 of the 75 pictures on the website. Here’s a link if you want to see all the others: nymeta.co/75-iconic-photos-will-define-21st-century-far-everyone-needs-see/ It’s worth checking out if you have a moment.
