I figure Im always in trouble, anyway - so I might as well go for it and express my opinion about the movie American Sniper. Do I appreciate Michael Moores comments about snipers being cowards? No. Do I celebrate ANY form of war? No, but I understand it is sometimes a necessary evil. I kept quiet about this movie - until I started reading a little more about why people are upset about it. Ive read several things that said more emphasis should have been placed on Chris Kyles PTSD. Maybe thats what caused him to invent stories about killing 30 bad people after Hurricane Katrina, or killing two thugs who tried to carjack him (neither story could ever be substantiated), or maybe thats why he invented a story that former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura defamed Navy SEALs and got into a fight with him at a local bar. Ventura successfully sued Kyle for the passage in his book, and a jury awarded him $1.845 million. Maybe PTSD is why he claimed to give all the proceeds from the book to charity (another whopper of a lie). Maybe PTSD is what caused him to LIKE killing people - read the book that he wrote (Im reading actual quotes from the book.) Whatever it was - try to remember - this book is not history. Its not fact. Its a movie based on someones rather biased view of events in their life, someone who IMO, is a proven (by jury) liar. Im not going to say he didnt help our side in the Iraq war - but then - WTF were we doing there in the 1st place, and what did we accomplish? Im proud of the men in my family who have served in the military, and Im grateful to Chris Kyle for his service...Im just not so sure he is the same man portrayed IN A MOVIE. I hope youll take some time to read...I would call Chris Kyle a victim of war.
