I love inside jokes, but simply making a reference to a film you love does not mean you are clever, leave alone funny, especially when everyone else loves the same films. (This is especially a problem for the writers of How I Met Your Mother.) The reason that Tarantino is the only one who can get away with it is because (a) he can write interesting conversational dialogue, (b) he can direct well, and (c) he recycles stuff from 1970s crap that no one else has seen I disagree with Whedon here in the sense that I still like this scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, but he is absolutely correct that it logically does not make any sense within the continuity of the story. ....considering that Temple of Doom is a prequel to Raiders, Im not sure why Indy is smiling either. Indiana Jones would not have yet shot the Raiders swordsman. (Which is weird because Indy reaches for his gun in such a brazen, Ive done this before way.) So this scene exists for only one of two reasons: Either (A) we are now supposed to believe Indiana Jones shoots swordsmen all the time -- which kind of dilutes the fun of that Raiders scene -- or (B) its there so that people watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom will say, Oh, I get it. (The correct answer is B, by the way.)
