I read ths,and Shared... ' Walking along Nairobi’s University Way one afternoon, a certain poster caught my eye. The placard was calling for anyone who needed help on their research projects to call up the numbers displayed in very bold letters. Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to call the numbers just to see if really they would do the research thesis as they claimed. The person on the other end was a man who sounded elated to receive my call. He directed me to his office at an uptown location in the city. I walked into the well-furnished office and directly opposite the door were three men peering at their computers. They turned their heads slightly in my direction; I mumbled a hello and asked for the person I had called. As the man directed me to the seat opposite his desk, I feigned the look of a perturbed person who needed a project done urgently and had no idea how to go about it. The man sat still for a while and studied my expression. I thought he could tell I was a journalist. I told him I needed a ready master’s thesis. Thinking that was an obnoxious demand to make, I was definitely wrong. The clean shaven man, possibly in his 30s, smiled coyly. “I have stand-by projects here in soft copy, you just have to say your preferred research topic,” he said. I informed him that he would have to coach me so I could defend the thesis confidently to my supervisor. “Coaching for defence only takes hours but it varies depending on the client’s ability to grasp concepts. But I will take you through the whole process so that you will defend your project without your supervisor suspecting any malpractice,” he said. He then did some quick calculations and told me it would cost me Sh2,000. It was an unbelievably low price to pay. I gave him my email address and he sent me the projects immediately. Then he gave me two more, so I would choose the best. I thanked him and walked out of the office. Outside the eight- storey building, I looked at the projects. I wondered how many of the professions out there serving our country were involved in this research fraud.'
