It is, I think, a mark of the press’ deterioration that since this story appeared in September 2013 there have been few if any follow-ups on the implications of such a breakthrough. In 1964 the Yale press revealed map that seemed to show that the Vikings landed in North America, and even made attempts to settle it, long before Christopher Columbus landed on Hispaniola, thining he had found a way to India. It made front-page news at the time, and editors noted it in their tickler files and assigned reportrs periodically to update the story and explore its implications. That sort of thing is rarely done now in our newsrooms depleted, enervated an chapeaned by corporate greed. To today’s press stories are fodder where they ought to be lanterns of enlightenment.
