KWARA PDP WANTS ELECTORAL OFFENDERS PROSECUTED, SEEKS EXTENSION OF REGISTRATION The Kwara Chapter of PDP has called for the prosecution of all electoral offenders arrested during the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in the State. This is contained in a statement issued by the PDP Publicity Secretary in the State, Chief Rex Olawoye, in Ilorin on Sunday. Olawoye alleged that two leaders of the opposition party in the state were arrested on Thursday by security operatives at Asa Local Government Area for being in possession of multiple permanent voter cards. He alleged that another party chieftain in Ilorin South Local Government Area was arrested and detained at Police ‘E’ Division, Ilorin, for allegedly being in possession of gun at a registration centre. According to him, the police also made arrests at Oloje Area of Ilorin West Local Government, on a party official who was involved in violence and attack on people during the registration. The statement by the PDP spokesman documented several electoral offences in the state and claimed that some of his party members allegedly assaulted were hospitised at Baki Hospital, Oloje, Ilorin. He however, said that no arrest was made in respect of violence unleashed on people queuing to register at a Centre, Igboro in Ilorin and Shawo Central Ward, Offa. ``We have reported a number of cases of voter cards being collected by individuals in multiple of hundreds, especially at Ibagun Ward, Okelele Are of Ilorin-East to no avail,’’ he said. Olawoye appealed to the party members to avoid violence, adding that `` PDP has a lot at stake.’’ ``We need extreme patience to obtain the necessary voter cards that would be used to push out a non-performing government. ``It is also imperative that cases of misbehaviour and illegality being perpetrated by opposing party members should be reported promptly to the security agents.’’ He called for the deployment of more security personnel to violence-prone areas in the state, especially Ilorin. The Police Public Relations Officer in Kwara , Mr Ajayi Okasanmi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that he was not aware of the issue raised by the PDP spokesman. He, however, promised ``to look into the case’’ In a related development, the PDP chairman, Akogun Oyedepo, has appealed to the INEC to extend the ongoing registration by two-days to enable prospective voters to register. Oyedepo made the appeal when he addressed newsmen on the ongoing voters registration in Ilorin. He noted that the extension was necessary because the first two days of the exercise were marred by ``faulty and inadequate equipment’’ to cope with the turnout of people. Oyedepo’ urged INEC to make sure that non-residents of a particular area were not allowed to register. The chairman advised INEC to also make sure that unclaimed permanent vote cards were properly kept for the owners so as to prevent the possibility of being sold to unscrupulous politicians.
