Left us on this day (Sept. 12) in 2003: the one, the only, the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash (complications from diabetes, age 71), considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century; with his deep, authoritative voice, rebellious image, a cannon of songs that sounded like an oncoming freight train & lyrics that made you feel as if he lived them, he personified American music; although he is primarily remembered as a country icon, his songs & sound spanned rocknroll, rockabilly, blues, folk & gospel - this crossover appeal won him the rare honor of induction into the the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1977), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1980), the R&R Hall of Fame (1992) & the Gospel Music Hall of Fame; he scored the 1969 US #2 & UK #4 A Boy Named Sue plus 11 other US Top 40 singles, including I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm & Man in Black; he was noted for his prison performances that resulted in multiple landmark live albums & for hosting his own popular US TV show in late-60s/early-70s; Johnny experienced a true renaissance in his later years thanks to a series of haunting albums (American I through American VI) produced by Rick Rubin for the American Recordings label…
