Many people use the abbreviation SAW or PBUH to fulfil the obligation of sending Allahs salaah upon Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) in their writing. Is this something that fulfils the obligation of sending the salaah and salaam on the messenger? Let us look at some of the statement of the scholars regarding this practice. 1. Bakr Abu Zayd said: The safe practice, the way of true love, (seeking) reward (from Allah), respect and honour for the Prophet of this nation is to send the salaah and salaam upon him when he is mentioned (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), carrying out the order of Allah and the guidance of his Prophet(sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). For this reason, written abbreviations or symbols used to represent salaah and salaam upon the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) are prohibited. some of these examples are: SAAD (ص) SAAWS SAW PBUH (and other like terms) Mujam Al-Manaahee Al-Laf-thiyyah 2. Ibn Har al-Haythamee said: The word SAAD-LAAM AYN-MEEM (صلعم) is not permissible. Rather, it is binding on us to send salaah and salaam. Al -Fataawaa Al-Hadeethiyyah 3. Al-Fayrooz Abaadee said: It is not appropriate to use symbols or abbreviations to refer to salaah and salaam, as some LAZY ones do... As-Salaatu wal-Bushr 4. Ahmad Shaakir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is the absurd tradition of some of the later generations that they abbreviated the writing of sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam. The Musnad of Imam Ahmad (#5088, 9/105) May Allah place true love in our hearts of His messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam).
