Not sure if this is the revenue I should use to share this - TopicsExpress

Not sure if this is the revenue I should use to share this information, but at our meeting last week (not today) one of the members of our group asked me if I liked socializing. At first, I thought my answer to be no. When you ask an autistic person if they enjoy small talk, the answer seems apparent. This is the precise reason so many people who know me comment on how little my Aspergian traits show through (some of this is, however, caused by the stereotypes of Aspergerians). I have given this question some thought, and here is my full answer: yes and no. I do not enjoy talking about things I find irrelevant and meaningless. I do not seek out conversations with people with whom I cannot have meaningful interactions. However, it is extremely difficult to have a meaningful conversation with someone without first engaging in said small talk. It is a necessity in most circumstances. As such, I found it exceedingly challenging to engage in personal interactions prior to my social education. Now, whenever I successfully engage in small talk, it means that I have broken free of one of the detrimental effects of Autism and have triumphed over a challenge that a Neurotypical person will never have to face and can allow people to see in me what I want them to, and that makes it all worthwhile.
