SEVERE WEATHER WARNING. ISSUED BY MetService AT 8:39 am 15-Jun-2013 HEAVY RAIN FOR MANY PARTS OF New Zealand THIS WEEKEND. RAINFALL WARNINGS NOW ISSUED FOR Nelson Marlborough Canterbury Westland AND Bay of Plenty. A large complex low in the Tasman Sea will slowly move towards the South Island this weekend. A strong moist northeast flow should spread onto New Zealand during Saturday and persist for most of Sunday. An active front is expected to move across northern New Zealand during Sunday. Rain is expected for all New Zealand this weekend. The heaviest falls are expected in Nelson with 300mm possible in western parts of the region. This is likely to be a significant rainfall event for Nelson with possible flooding and disruption to transport. Heavy rain warnings have now also been issued for northern parts of Marlborough, Westland south of Hokitika, Canterbury south of the Rakaia, North Otago , Dunedin and also for the Bay of Plenty. People in all these areas should be aware streams and rivers are likely to rise rapidly on Sunday as the heavy rain sets in. HEAVY RAIN WARNING AREA/S AFFECTED All of Nelson FORECAST Rain is expected to begin Saturday afternoon or evening and become heavier Saturday night. Rain should then continue through Sunday and into Monday morning. In the 33 hrs from 9pm Saturday to 6am Monday expect 200-300mm in areas west of Motueka. During this time 100-150mm is also expected for the lowlands of Tasman Bay, including Nelson city, and for the Richmond ranges. Rainfall intensities of 20 to 30mm per hr are likely in the western ranges during Sunday. AREA/S AFFECTED
