Sensory Processing Tuesday! How do you match a childs sensory processing profile to the right sporting choice? - Sensory Defensiveness Many sensory defensive children are anxious and dislike noise and crowds. They can get very stressed with balls coming towards them fast, light touch as kids brush against them and noise within a changing room. Some of these children struggle with the fast team sports such as hockey. Ironically, these same children can really enjoy whole body sports such as martial arts with wrestling, rugby with tackle - as the deep touch pressure of the whole body can help them regulate. Some of these children also love gymnastics as the heavy work to the joints and muscles can also help them regulate. When they are older, they can love rock-climbing, rowing and canoeing as the heavy work and the more singular activities (simple focus vs. lots of noise and movement with a team). Do any of you have kids with sensory defensiveness? What do they like/ not like? Vivienne Williams (Principal OT)
