So I was tagged by Cheris Hodges to participate in The Page 7 Challenge. The challenge is to post a portion of page 7 from your current writing project. Mine [UNEDITED] is below and I tag Shayla Herndon-Edmunds, Chantal Lorenzo, Michael L. Hewlett and whoever else is writing and wants to do this. ----------------- Well Im finally on my way to the airport. Good. What time does your flight get in again? 8:47 and that reminds me I need to text Lauren to make sure shes not late. Shes always late. Lauren never picked Melody up on time. Ever. And every time, she always had an excuse. One of the kids. Melody understood but still. Well actually Ill be picking you up. I wanted to so I called Lauren. She said it was okay. Solomon didnt tell her Lauren was actually relieved when he offered. Todd had to work late and her mother wasnt feeling well. By the time shed get all the kids bathed and in bed, it would be entirely too late. Melody was too excited to care. You are?! she squealed. Does this mean youre spending the night tonight too? Melody already knew what piece shed wear to bed- the new purple LaPearla number. Nah. Not tonight. Ive got the board meeting in the morning and Ive already set it up to spend the night Friday. But weve got a few hours and Im sure we can make the most out of them... Hea, did I tell you what the board is going to put before the church next month for a vote? Solomon always tried to distract Melody when he knew he was disappointing her. No. What? Melody was defeated. She was happy that she would get to see Solomon tonight but she wanted to see Solomon every night. Every night she was in Atlanta and every night for the rest of her life. They want to shift from building the transition housing and build a family life center including a full gym with memberships. Im pissed. Working with those on the margins was Solomons passion. He had an uncle and two cousins who died from drug overdoses and he blamed his family and the church for it. He said they never cared about what happened to them once they got addicted. He would change that on his watch. And his plan was pretty powerful. These werent the average transition homes; anybody would want to live here. Solomon believed that if you put intention behind the effort for care, those receiving it would put intention behind getting clean. Melody knew this was important to him; unfortunately she didnt show it. Well, Im sure youll be the first to sign up for one of those gym memberships, Pastor Third. For the most part, everyone at Greater White Rock called Solomon Pastor Third. Deep down, he hated it but he never said anything. Calling him that never gave him the opportunity to establish an identity outside his grandfather and fathers shadows. But whenever Melody called him that, he knew she was saying it to be mean because she was upset. Immediately, she wished she could have taken it back, especially when Solomon fell silent for what seemed like an eternity. It was a full minute before Solomon spoke again. I see you when you get to the airport. Bye Mel. Solomon hung up; Melody knew shed hurt him. Their time together was always scarce and, therefore, precious. She hated fighting with him over things that didnt matter. Melody knew that the boards decision was wrong and it would hurt Solomon tremendously if the church approved it. But, Melody also knew that Solomon would never stand up to the board or the congregation. A family life center was his fathers dream and, no matter what he did, the congregation still saw Solomon as that little boy who would cry whenever someone caught the Holy Ghost and started shouting. He was never seen as the man he had become. Still, Melody should have been there for him and she wasnt.
