So there it is. After twenty years, over two terms, Alex has lead the party and the wider independence movement further to its goal than anyone. Today, he delivered a speech Id consider to be faultless and with the usual wit and jest weve come to expect from him at conference. From interrupting the budget and being banned from the House of Commons to becoming the longest serving and most successful First Minster this country has ever seen, and everything in between, you cant argue the charisma of Alex Salmond. While I have focused on the end of the most successful era for the Scottish National Party these last few days, I feel nothing but excitement and confidence on this first evening on the next step to independence and the new era for the party. Today, Nicola was sworn in as leader, ten years after her first bid to lead the party she joined as a teenager. Rightly so, nobody in the party stood against her. I believe the ten years she has been Deputy Leader and Deputy First Minister has, in fact, been a blessing. She is now 10 years wiser on becoming leader, she couldnt have asked for a better mentor!! It is, though, the appointment of Stewart Hosie as Deputy Leader that I feel most proud about. When it became apparent that he would be standing for the role, he instantly got my backing. A strong abrasive character, the kind of character all our new SNP MPs will look up to come May the 8th. During the Independence Campagin, Stewart was at the helm of one of the most successful Yes campaigns in the country (Dundee returned 57.3% Yes). I think that best way to honour the hard work done by Stewart and his team was to vote for him to become our Deputy Leader and anyone that has asked me in the last few days and weeks was always of my wish for him to become DL. 57 days ago, when we stared defeat in the eyes and were on the canvass, we didnt lie down for the ten count. We didnt stop fighting for what we believed in. We took a day or two, naturally, but when we got back to work on the 22nd of September, we knew that we had a bigger support for our cause than ever before and a bigger belief than ever before. None of the unionist parties can believe how powerful we are as a movement right now. While Scottish Labour are on the verge of stepping back in time with the Blairite Murphy and forcing a rival to the West-Lothian Question by offering us the East-Renfrewshire Question! Not to mention the UK-wide Labour party not sure what theyre doing with their leader. The Lib Dems facing a backlash for jumping in bed with the Tories in the last election and The Conservatives facing yet another EU-led civil war. It is us, the Pro-Indy parties, the separatists that are emerging as the real winners from the referendum debate. At the last count, the SNP had 85,101 members which works . The SSP have 3,500 and the Scottish Greens, 7,500. Organisations like the Radical Independence Campaign and Women for Indy have had or are planning to have big conferences normally seen only by political parties and Nicola Sturgeon has sold out venues nationwide, not to mention The Hydro, normally seen by rock bands. This is the most exciting time to be involved in Scottish politics, friends. Get involved in any way you can! Politics has changed in this country forever. Now all we need to work on is changing the sovereignty of this great nation. If not now, then when? If not us, then who? Friends, we are the independence generation and out time will come.
