This is my 3rd pregnancy. My second confirmed with Cholestasis. I am going to be delivering in 6 days at 34 weeks pregnant. I want to share my story and why I believe they need to do more research on ICP. My first pregnancy was undiagnosed Cholestasis. I am certain of this. I itched but they told me it was just allergies. I had my baby at 40 weeks.. they did discover I had elevated liver enzymes by a fluke visit to the ER, but said it was associated with NASH. I hemorrhaged during labor and my placenta was in horrible shape. 3 months post partum I had my LFTs checked again and everything was normal. My second pregnancy I was diagnosed with Cholestasis at 32 weeks. My Bile salts were 15 and my lfts were also elevated. My cholestasis continued to stay mild into my 37th week. When My son failed a BPP and NST. They were going to let me go to 39 weeks. I was induced that night and my son had Meconumed in the womb but was luckily born healthy. This 3rd pregnancy has by far been the hardest. I began itching at just 10 weeks. I had some morning sickness that was severe the first trimester but by 2nd trimester I was feeling much better. However, the itching was sticking around. Finalyl at 14 weeks my dr. checked my bile salts. They came back at a low 11 and my LFTs which were slightly elevated. I was immediately started on 300 MG of urso 3x a day. I also was sent to see a MFM who confirmed a diagnoses of Cholestasis. They continued to check my Bile Salts and they jumped a tiny bit to 14 but then when back down to a normal range which was fantastic. The Urso was working. However, my LFTs continued to slowly rise regardless of the Urso. I also would get breaks from itching and then the itch would come back with a vengeance. At 28 weeks I started vomiting everything. Out of nowhere. The dr. initially thought it was just a stomach bug and had me get fluids and gave me zofran IV. However the Vomiting continued. Then I began to get migraines.. which led to my first time admitted to the hospital. I was also itching again. I was there for 3 days my electrolytes were off and my LFTs kept rising, however the specialists could still find nothing wrong with me except for Cholestasis. It was also the first time I ever experienced RUQ pain. Finally I was released but with medicine to help me try to eat, but I couldnt. A week later I went into a dr. apt barely able to walk or function. I was admitted again. This time I was severely dehydrated my protein Albumin was next to none my LFTs had increased again some more. Once again the only thing they could find wrong was Cholestasis. I spent 4 days and went home with a PICC line and a TPN. Which they knew was hard on my liver but said I had to get my levels straight. I was admitted again a week or so later from a fever and it was that time they discovered my LFTS had tripled to AST 398 and ALT 460. They upped my URSO. My electrolytes were still off so they wouldnt remove the TPN. I was finally sent home when I stabilized some. The following Wednesday I was told I would be delivered at 34 weeks. This entire time the only thing they can find wrong with me is Cholestasis. I know my symptoms arnt common and the Doctors dont really know what to do or think. I think its just proof there needs to be more studies done of women with ICP. I am having my 3rd and final baby in 6 days. I am praying I can make this week at home and not end up back in the hospital before then.
