Update! Thanks to you and the grassroots support from the MX-5 Miata community, the Miatas at Mazda Raceway 25th Anniversary and World Record event has taken off like a rocket. Registration numbers have nearly doubled. At my last email we had 682 cars signed up. As of this writing we now have more than 1,150 cars registered, and that number is climbing every day. This is actually just the first of several updates to help people with long-term planning. With some of you driving in all the way from Canada and all over the U.S., as well as others flying in from the Philippines, Japan and Brazil, I wanted to give everyone an idea of whats in store. Well be sending more (and more detailed) info on a regular basis as we get closer to the event. World Record In the be careful what you wish for department, we have decided to make some major changes to the World Record portion of the event. As the number of registered cars continued to climb well past 1,000, we realized that as picturesque as the Monterey Peninsula is and as great the roads are for driving, its winding two-lane byways were not meant to accommodate the more than 1,000 MX-5s now registered for the Guinness World Record parade attempt. And because we want each and every one of you to be part of the anniversary celebration, we’ve set our sights on other records – BIGGER records. We don’t need Guinness to tell us how many of us there are! So instead we’re now focusing on the Largest Recorded MX-5 Miata Gathering -- specifically for North America, with the ultimate goal of having the Largest Recorded MX-5 Miata Gathering in the World, which is about 1,600. (We can do this!) Specifically, we will be getting everyone together in a HUGE parking lot starting at noon on Friday, 5 September, with the target of having everyone in place for a special group photo (drones and a helicopter) at 5 pm. Well be sending out all the specific details in subsequent emails. We have a pretty sensational day planned for that Friday (including a free BBQ and entertainment), with the good news being that we wont be asking people to start lining up for a long and slow parade starting at 6am on Saturday morning as originally published. Friday will kick off the weekend with a relaxing and fun way to meet and make new friends, with some great surprises in store as part of a historic and unforgettable MX-5 Miata day. One of the other benefits of changing the Record day to Friday is that it will also enable all of the track (hot lap) participants to take part in the record without losing any track time. You should all have received an email requesting you to follow a link and input some further data (plate number, etc). If youre planning on participating in the Record please make sure to get that done as soon as you can to help us to more accurately document and confirm the numbers. miatasatmazdaraceway/record_register2014.php Trust me. You will want to do everything you can to be there on Friday to participate in the Record and the day. It will be worth it. Parade Laps As our numbers continued to climb past 1,000 cars, finding a way to conduct parade laps without impacting the track days has proven to be a challenge, to say the least. I know how important it is for many of you to be able to take a lap at Mazda Raceway in your own car on this historic weekend, so were doing our best. Changing the Record to Friday will also now enable us to offer parade laps on both Saturday and Sunday. Were working out a system and schedule (sending cars out in waves) that will hopefully allow every driver to get some parade laps, but well need your help and cooperation to make that aspect a reality. Well not only need people to follow the plan we set up, but this also means that we will most likely need some volunteers to share in traffic control duties. Well be seeking volunteers to help when their wave isnt on track. More details to follow as this unfolds. We will have lots more exciting news to share with you over the coming days and weeks, so please watch your mailboxes. I keep using the phrase historic event because we really are going to make some history together. With the way this is growing its going to take us all working together as a community to pull off this sensational event. Our numbers have grown to todays level through the sustained hard work and enthusiasm that so many of you have shown. I continue to be touched by the offers of help and support from you -- thank you! Stay tuned. The magic is about to start.
