--------------- Inventor Of First Practical Handheld Mobile Phone --------------- Motorola research Martin Cooper has been credited as the inventor of the first practice mobile phone for handheld use outside of a vehicle. Motorola was intensely competing against Bell Labs. Cooper’s rival at Bell Labs was Dr. Joel S. Engel. Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973. Cooper’s first call was to Bell Labs. Cooper said “As I walked down the street while talking on the phone, sophisticated New Yorkers gaped at the sight of someone actually moving around while making a phone call. Remember that in 1973, there weren’t cordless telephones or cellular phones. I made numerous calls, including one where I crossed the street while talking to a New York radio reporter – probably one of the more dangerous things I have ever done in my life.” The invention sold for $3,995 and weighed two pounds. The DynaTAc mobile phones had costed $100 million in development and it took over 10 years to hit the market. On March 6, 1983, the DynaTAc mobile phones were available on the market and the talk time was only an hour and a half. It took 10 hours to charge as well. ---------------------- Source : Pulse 2 ---------------------
