------#1154------- Hello. I just want to say something really quick. Today I went to registration day for HKU. It was the first time Id been to HKU since a year perhaps when I visited the campus. I just graduated from high school in June of 2014. I read this confessions page a while before I got accepted and to be honest I was really scared but secretly hoping HKU wasnt actually going to be like this. Sadly it was pretty much what people are saying. Immediately I felt the separation of local, non-local and international students. I also felt like the student union expected everyone to just know where to go, even though a lot of us were there for the first time...therefore I got lost like helluh lost! Felt like a sheep bleating uselessly and the only way I could get help was to ask others. (I did actually ask people, let me explain about that later) I also felt like it was unfair that there is no English used at O-Camp. Sure the majority speaks Cantonese but that doesnt mean then that the minority should be excluded, at least there could be translation so therefore there would be more integration. The thing is, I also understand the side of the locals. They have only ever been accustomed to using the Cantonese language. Maybe its not because theyre too arrogant, maybe its because theyre scared of using their English but to be honest again, if theyre at HKU they most probably studied English at school in Hong Kong. Theyre just not used to using it as much. Now heres the deal. I am a local non-Jupas student. I speak English, Cantonese, French, German, I want to learn Mandarin and I used to know some Hindi. I dont want there to be a gap between all of us because in the end we are all just broken humans that make mistakes but want to have people there to love us! I just want to say Im gonna be fighting for those who dont know Cantonese, but Im not gonna put down the locals either because they are my people as much as international/exchange etc. people are as well. I think the problem with us complaining like this is that nothing gets done. So lets stand up. Try to help one another and maybe just maybe slowly things will change. Thank you. -Just someone who wants HKU to be a better place!
