-- January 26th (1925): Award-winning actor Paul Newman was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Known mostly for his impressive film and stage career, Paul, along with wife Joanne Woodward, have long been involved in many progressive and charitable causes. His love for cooking turned him into a food industry tycoon and philanthropist, with the Newmans Own line of products. Newman and his family also have been major contributors to a summer camp for children with terminal and serious illnesses (Hole in the Wall Gang Camp) in Connecticut. The Newman family (especially Joanne and the children) have enjoyed a longtime (though low-key) relationship with the Unitarian Universalist church in Westport, CT. (They also likely attracted fellow actors, the late Christopher and Dana Reeve, to UU and to the Westport congregation as well.) Paul kept his religious views mostly to himself, but has been described as an agnostic and humanist. He once told Barbara Walters in an interview that he didn’t believe in an afterlife. Paul died in September of 2008.
