Montclair is home to unusual bedfellows in the ‘Common Core’ discussions: our residents include prominent corporate, government and non-profit leaders who are integral to the promotion of ‘Common Core,’ and prominent labor union activists who are opposed . Further, both camps include current public school parents. Where do you and your family fit in? Come and learn more on October 15 when Ms. Adams addresses the Montclair Republican Club. Carolee Adams, lifelong resident of Bergen County, and President, Eagle Forum of New Jersey, is a former business director and TV/radio spokesperson for a major international bank, and member of the press to the 1996 National Governors Summit on Education that focused on School-to-Work (and College and Career). At that Summit, ACHIEVE was founded. ACHIEVE remains one of the primary developers and promoters of the Common Core State Standards Initiative a/k/a Common Core, nationalized K-12 standards imposed upon states for the first time in our history. Over the last 18 months, Carolee has spoken over 50 times opposing Common Core/PARCC (the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) at rallies, meetings, on radio and TV, State and Local Boards of Education, State and County legislative hearings, and a national conference in the Washington, DC area. Common Core/PARCC legislation in New Jersey passed the New Jersey State Assembly 72-4. That legislation would delay its implementation; assess its cost; compare current state standards to Common Core; prohibit the sharing of private student information without parental consent; and more. In addition, Resolutions opposing Common Core/PARCC have been passed via bi-partisan County Boards of Freeholders including the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and various Boards of Education such as Carlstadt, Ridgewood, and Wayne. A Letter signed by 12 Republican State Senators to (former) New Jersey Department of Education Commissioner, Christopher Cerf, sought answers about Common Core/PARCC before the state moved forward. The lead Senator of this Letter credited Carolee as the one who encouraged that letter. Former Congressman, Dick Armey, compared Carolee to Harriet Beecher Stowe as the ‘little woman who started this great big war’ after Carolee proposed an Amendment that Armey introduced for her and added to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, H.R. 6. That Amendment provoked 3 million phone calls to Congress in its favor, shutting down its telecommunications’ system for 10 days, and was overwhelmingly passed. Carolee was the primary proponent of state law creating the New Jersey State Day of Prayer, (it remains the only state in the USA with such a law), and New Jersey’s primary opponent to School-to-Work-to College-to-Career (a 1990s ancestor of Common Core/PARCC) that kept it from implementation. In 2001, she also proposed a bill that was signed into law opposing nosy, intrusive Student Behavior Surveys without prior written informed parental consent. Bi-annual legislative attempts to diminish that law with its important parental consent, and its protection of student privacy, have repeatedly failed. thealternativepress/articles/republican-club-hosts-community-forum-on-parcc-an Her daughter is a successful Manhattan attorney and her son a legislative aide to a United States Senator.
