--Operation Market Garden Day 5 Update: Sep. 21, 1944-- There appears to be no hope for any salvaging of the operation with Arnhem Bridge firmly in German hands, British airborne units pressed into a narrow perimeter in Oosterbeek, and the armored column able to make only slow, grueling progress against German defenders between Nijmegen and Arnhem. Arnhem, British Sector- British 1st Airborne at Oosterbeek bears the full brunt of German attacks now that the men at the bridge have surrendered. The perimeter will become known as the witchs cauldron. One German attack captures the high ground overlooking the Rhine and puts the entire division in danger. Attempted air resupply intercepted by determined German fighters. Driel, Polish Sector- Across the river from Oosterbeek, the Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade makes its first combat jump after two days of weather delays in England. Banned from joining their countrymen fighting against the Germans in the Warsaw Uprising, the brigade takes the town of Driel after heavy fighting with German forces only to find no trace of the ferry they hoped to use to support the trapped British across the river. Nijmegen, 82nd AB Sector- British tanks finally begin to advance up what is dubbed the Island, the single highway connecting Nijmegen and Arnhem, a raised road surrounded by marshes. It is incredibly easy for German guns and tanks to fire upon British tanks and the advance is crushingly slow. Meanwhile, fighting continues around Nijmegen itself and all along the long highway now defended by British forces and the American 82nd and 101st AB.
