- WP FOCUS - THURSDAY 31 OCTOBER 2013 Celtics Thursday Summer Trail Runs Meet at KLOOF NEK Run around Lion’s Head and Signal Hill. Meet in the parking area on the left just 100 meters above Kloof Nek itself (i.e. near the bottom of Tafelberg Road). NB: please all do your best to stay in your groups – most particularly do not run ahead of your group leader. If you are new to the runs and unsure of the pace of the various groups, then rather run with a slower group initially. FRIDAY 1 NOVEMBER 2013 Orca Pub-Pub Beginners Trail Run With Beryl Penny Instead of running this Friday, Beryl is encouraging runners to go out to do the Halloween Run on Thursday evening (31 October 2013) at Delvera Wine Farm in Stellenbosch. Chat to Beryl about it. Contact number below. Generally speaking, these are runs specifically designed for those just getting into trail running. Please help spread the word. Runs will be between 6 and 10km with a rehydration session in the pub afterwards. Please note that headlamps will be still required i.e. so don’t forget to take your functioning headlamp and a warm running jacket. Then bring some warm clothes for afterwards and a little cash for some drinks at the bar. SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER 2013 Acsis VOB Longer Faster Group Kloof Nek / Pipe Track / Kasteelspoort / Aqueduct / Maclears Beacon / Platteklip Run Leader - Freda Walters – [email protected] / 0834560059 Start Time and Place - 06h30 sharp at the Kloof Nek car park next to the SANParks Info Centre. Route - As in the heading. Distance - About 18km Running Time - About 3.5 hours Important Notes Please carry sufficient water and energy snacks for the whole run. Please wear and carry proper, weather-appropriate trail running gear. Use sun protection (sunblock and a cap / hat). Summer is here. With warmer weather, the snakes are more active so watch where you’re putting those feet. Carry a cell phone with Freda’s number stored in it just in case you get lost. It happens. Don’t leave any valuables in your car and leave everything else stored out of sight. There have been vehicle break-ins in this area. We don’t have car guards. SWEEP REQUIRED Any volunteers to hang around near the back and make sure the backmarkers are okay? At least you won’t have to tramp on snakes like the frontrunners. Table Mountain Trailers (Acsis VOB Medium Distance Slower Group) Simonstown Scramble & Historical Meander Route - From the parking area on the beach behind the station up through the historic part of Simons Town and up the stone steps beneath the old cable way gantries to Just Nuisances grave. Then follow the road out of the naval area across Red Hill Road towards Kleinplaas Dam before looping back to run through the old Scala barracks and gun-batteries to see the WW2 9,2 inch guns and the recently renovated cannons before heading back to the cars. Rendezvous and Start Time - RV in the parking area on the beach behind the railway station to be ready to start running at 0630 How to get there? - Drive down to Simons Town and just beyond the Simons Town railway station, look for a road turning left and down to the beach between the station fence and Admiralty House gardens stone wall. Drive down and park as convenient. Terrain and Distance - A pleasant warm-up jog through the ancient streets of old Simons Town redolent of a bygone era, the a good climb up the stone steps to the crest overlooking Simons Bay. Pause at the actual grave of AB Just Nuisance before a relaxing jog along Red hills minor roads, undulating trails and tracks before descending down the steep concrete road past Scala barracks and batteries and then back to the station along the footpath next to the main road. All in all about 11.5kms Recovery Group - The recovery group will follow the same route to start with at a more modest pace but will take a slightly shorter route to give a distance of about 9kms Walking Group - Fridays confirmation E-mail will confirm or not whether Fay will be taking her walking group SUNDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2013 Mates Sunday Trail Run There will be no MATES run owing to the A4dable Trail Challenge taking place on Sunday. Just be there and run like a trail runner. Time: - 06:30 Registration for 07:00 start. Where: - Constantia Nek car park. Route: - Over Vlakkenberg to tar road that comes up from Tokai Forest. Right onto the road, first right again onto the single track and then down past Manganese Mines. First left onto the traverse into Blackburn Ravine. Up Blackburn to the wooden deck. Up the single track to the Mast on top of Constantiaberg. Down the single track past Elephant’s Eye. Level 6 Tokai Forest to the tar road again. Right onto the road and left on the first bit of single track. Back over Vlakkenberg to the finish at Constantia Nek. Distance: - 21.5km Prize giving whenever enough people have finished. If you are a trail runner, you have to be there. Simple as that.
