-Diary of a Costume Newb- Mon 1/3: Crane Mon on the Back Method: Exacto-Knife out mon, trace on cloth, Paint in Photo 1 is after I got the mon cut out from the paper. I ended up buying a new knife (the old one I had was REAL old, and a little rusted). I centered it on the kimono and held it in place with a sewing pin, then traced around it with a washable crayon. Photo 2 is the end product. I painted over the crayon, then filled in. I did some touch up to try to make it even as possible. Positives: This method was fairly quick, it only took me a few hours to get it all cut out, traced, and painted in. It required few supplies (cutting board and exacto knife, paper, crayon, paint and brushes), and all those supplies were cheap and easy to find. The end product looks fairly clean as well. Negatives: Even with a brand new perfectly sharp exacto knife, cutting the paper was less than ideal, especially around curves or into small areas. Im not sure if a change from standard printer paper or a different cutting tool would clean this up, but I was left with ragged edges in more than one place, making the tracing a little rough. The crayon, while it dabbed off easily with a washcloth for mistakes, was a little too thick for nice clean lines (though it didnt end up mattering as much in the end). The freeform painting, while helped with the traced lines, also was a little less clean than I wished for, with uneven edges and brush streaks slightly obvious in a few places. Overall, I can see that a method like this would be a lot easier if you had an outer shell and painted the cut out rather than have a pattern to trace on, since that would get much cleaner lines and save a step. A much more connected and cleaner mon would be much preferred since you could do the pattern and paint inside rather than the reverse. Perhaps a finer brush would help, as would a finer tracing tool, like a well sharpened colored pencil, though I liked the crayons washability. I would also much prefer if there was an easier way of cutting out a mon, or an easier to cut paper. Im well satisfied with the end product all the same. ps: I also wish I could make it a little bigger. It ended up being an 8 diameter, which was easy to print on standard paper, but if I had a very simple way of getting a 12 or so, thatd be great.
