-Raspberry Tart- The art historian and his wife had both been married before and seemed pleased with themselves for getting it right the second time. He was about seventy five, and he held his hands pressed together when entering temples. He was a photographer, the kind who carries his own weight in lenses. She was a thin woman in her sixties, with hair so straight you wondered how she managed it. They adored each other and traveled the world to places like Mongolia and Thailand. When I asked them about the best meal they had ever eaten, they smiled knowingly as their eyes met, saying in unison, “raspberry tart.” It was a breakfast eaten, they said, on a park bench in Paris. They couldn’t quite express its exquisiteness in words, but what they weren’t saying came across clearly, summarizing their life and love and shared gratitude for the fact that they had made their way to each other. I will never forget the two of them remembering and holding a shared moment in their shared mind.
