#00205 Essay STOLEN LIVES Missing cases are filed every day. Relatives who went abroad are suddenly unheard of. Kids get kidnapped and turn up bruised and damaged in the opposite corner of the country. That is, if they are lucky. Human trafficking was a relatively unheard of social issue in our country, until recently. People are constantly being illegally trafficked from, within, and to India and subjected to abuse, forced labour and prostitution. Baby bones grind away under the weight of things they cannot carry, thoughts they do not understand, and people they aren’t familiar with. Expectations are crushed to a pulp when people discover that their hopes for a better job, more money to feed the family, were exploited by someone who wishes for free labour and complete jurisdiction over the laborer. These traffickers reasons are many, their demographics mostly varied, and this begs a serious question – why has this matter taken so long to find a limelight, especially as the numbers are increasing every year? Currently, the government has set up anti-human trafficking units and trained many officials to deal with cases of human trafficking. Many have been discovered and recuperated, but these acts are short lived. How can it be ensured that these exploited people are recovering from their mental issues, such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety? Are they being diagnosed for STDs, AIDS and other diseases? Recuperation, even after saving these victims, is going to be hard enough for the physiological state as well. There are also reports that while the government has employed officials to find the traffickers and save the trafficked, these victims aren’t being proactively seeked out. While action plans are being made by many state governments, the plans remain in the planning stage, or funding to execute these plans turn out to be inadequate. The truth remains that sufficient action hasn’t been taken by the government to minimize these risks, and even now, the attention given to this topic remains dim. The people of India need to be educated on these issues. These people shouldn’t be just saved and dumped with the expectation to continue with their lives, after so much in it has changed.Above all, the people of India need to be educated and brought to attention on these issues, because only the people can bring these matters to the forefront of our democratic government, and force the attention of our leaders into taking better and more efficient action.
