0129 ‘’JESUS..HAVE PITY ON ME!’’ Let us start with an incident as Jesus went about His public life: Luke 18:35-43. Now as He (Jesus) approached Jericho a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging, and hearing a crowd going by, he inquired what was happening. They told him, ‘’Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.’’ He shouted, ‘’Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me!’’ The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more. ‘’Son of David, have pity on me!’’ Then Jesus stopped and ordered that he be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, ‘’WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?’’ He replied, ‘’LORD, PLEASE LET ME SEE.’’ Jesus told him, ‘’HAVE SIGHT; YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU.’’ He immediately received his sight AND FOLLOWED HIM, GIVING GLORY TO GOD. When they saw this, all the people GAVE PRAISE TO GOD. ___________________________________________________________ Today, the world is so engrossed on progress-oriented, success-seeking endeavours that require the hands-on attention of the ambitious and aggressive who, most times, use others to attain their ends. What is important are things concrete, things that mean results, things that spell out stepping stones to self-aggrandizement, self-worth; to be on the top of the heap; where wealth, material collections, assets manifest status in the community; glaring announcement of power and influence; the world practically on its knees before anyone wielding these. Sadly too, the noise, hustle and bustle, mean a marketplace for clashes of pride, prejudices, selfishness, greed, envy, petty jealousies, uncalled-for conflicts, crab mentalities, loss of family values and most importantly – fear of the Lord. Amidst this melee, I wonder what would be our reaction if we hear a crowd passing by, and we ask what was happening, and someone said, ‘’JESUS OF NAZARETH IS PASSING BY!’’ Would we give notice at all? Would we get excited? Would we leave everything we were doing at that very moment? Would we choose to come forward and follow the crowd? Or would we just casually look by and stick to our worldly collections? Or would we rather shout, ‘’JESUS, SON OF DAVID, HAVE PITY ON ME.’’ And when He asks, ‘’WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO FOR YOU?’’ Eagerly, we reply, ‘’HAVE MERCY ON ME FOR I AM A GREAT SINNER!’’ And then, what GREAT JOY it would be when He replies, ‘’BE CLEANSED, YOUR FAITH HAS SAVED YOU!’’ .mcnol.111714.
