(02/08/2013) U.S. jobless claims drop 19,000 to 326,000 Lowest level since early 2008, but July data tricky to interpret By Market Watch--(Aug. 1, 2013, 8:56 a.m. EDT ) [請分享這post給你的朋友/給LIKE。更多人到我的Facebook Page,我會提供更好的內容.謝謝.您的支持和鼓勵是重要的!] The number of people who applied last week for new unemployment benefits fell to the lowest level since early 2008, but it’s unclear whether the decline reflects an improvement in the U.S. labor market or a seasonal quirk that often occurs in July. Initial jobless claims dropped by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 326,000 in the week ended July 27, marking the lowest level in five and a half years, the government said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to total 345,000. The claims data, however, often jump up and down in July because of periodic shutdowns at auto plants for retooling and temporary layoffs related to the end of the regular school year. These seasonal effects are hard to adjust for because they can change markedly from one year to the next. Wall Street tends to give the weekly jobless claims report less sway until those seasonal effects fade later in August. The average of new claims over the past month, a more reliable gauge than the volatile weekly number, fell by a smaller 4,500 to 341,250, the U.S. Labor Department said. Still, that was the lowest level in 10 weeks and just shy of a five-year low. The level of claims — a proxy for layoffs — has hovered just under the 350,000 mark for most of 2013, consistent with a stable increase in hiring nationwide. See latest news on corporate job cuts. The U.S. economy has added an average of slightly more than 200,000 net jobs a month through the first six months of 2013, the best stretch of job creation to start a year since 2005. The latest employment report, for July, is expected to show an increase of at least 175,000 new jobs, with the unemployment rate falling a notch to 7.5%. The government will release the report on Friday. Meanwhile, the government said continuing claims decreased by 52,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.95 million in the week ended July 20. Continuing claims reflect the number of people already receiving benefits. Initial claims from two weeks ago, meanwhile, were revised up to 345,000 from an original reading of 343,000, based on more complete data collected at the state level.
