020 Police Ban On Rallies Against Law 10.10.2013, 9:19 Local Share this story Facebook Twitter Police ban on public rallies in Kaduna State is criticized for being unlawful in relation to peoples civil and political rights. President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria Shehu Sani yesterday called the ban unconstitutional, adding that it violates the freedom of assembly and of speech. He said that according to the 1999 constitution and the recent Supreme Court ruling, all Nigerians are guaranteed the right to assemble and express their opinions without censure or license from security agencies or the ruling party. The order is an affront against civil rights and political rights of our people; it is a red flag against freedom and an evil and despotic expression by the government and the state apparatus, he said. He added that violence in Kaduna State or any part of Northern Nigeria should not be an expedient excuse to extinguish the flames of freedom. Center for Development and Rights Advocacy (CEDRA) also condemned the ban as the one infringing fundamental rights. The spokesman of CEDRA, Dr. John Danfulani said: We find it contradictory and fishy that the same commissioner of police that denied that there was commotion on Saturday during the rally, came out later to use the said commotion to ban lawful and peaceful assembly in the state. Kaduna State police on Tuesday announced a ban on any public gatherings following clashes that occurred on Saturday at a political rally in support of President Goodluck Jonathans re-election in 2015. At least one person was said to have died and several others injured. The states Police Commissioner Olufemi Adenaike explained at a news conference yesterday: Police will not play with the fragile peace in the state. He also added that the ban may be lifted in the next few months depending on the security situation.
