03Sep Seeing Beyond The Natural Daily Devotional with Dr. Mike Okonkwo “Eyes hath not seen nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of men the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him but God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 Yesterday, picturing the word. I encouraged you to learn to read the word in pictures. In other words, imagine what you are reading. In John Chapter 6, Jesus began to speak to His disciples, He said: “except you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” The bible said many of them went away. They began to desert Him because they couldn’t see beyond the muscles and bones. It actually sounds absurd, but they did not wait to find out what exactly He was saying. They heard Him but did not understand Him so they could not see beyond the natural and they turned away from Him – what a tragedy. The same thing happened to the rich man who came to Jesus and wanted the recipe for salvation. He was so full of himself and so confident. He could boast of keeping the law. But look at what Jesus said: “If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me” (Matt.19:21). Think of it, this is a man that claimed to have kept all the scriptures, when he heard this, the Bible said he went away sorrowful because he had great possessions (verse 22) but when I read this, I like to read it this way: “he went away sorrowful because great possessions had him”. You know why I said that? He could not see himself without them. He turned away from eternity because of earthly goods. He could only see himself becoming poor and since he didn’t want that, he walked away from his destiny. Why didn’t he look at the disciples of Jesus and even Jesus Himself and say, if this man can take care of them, then He can take care of me. No! He couldn’t see that, all he saw was poverty, lack, hunger and he could not take it in. The opposite was the case with Abraham. God told Him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. He went ahead, because in his mind’s eye, he saw the boy restored back to him. He had no precedence to lean on like we do today, but he saw the right picture and dared to go all out for God and today we are all sons and daughters of Abraham. May the Lord open your eyes to see beyond the natural in Jesus’ name.
