And at Safa, several employees have been handed retrenchment letters hardly a week after its new leadership was elected. City Press can reveal that there is more to the developments around Mokanyane and Mokitimi-Makhofola. It is believed certain people on the PSL board felt undermined when Mokanyane concluded a sponsorship deal with a hotel chain without their approval. “Things are not going well and the brand is suffering,” said the insider. On Thursday, the league placed a misleading Telkom Knockout advert in a daily newspaper with the wrong fixture dates and times and had to do damage control the following day with another full-page ad. City Press sent inquiries to the PSL on Friday morning and the league promised to respond. But the next move was a press statement released by the league in a bid to neutralise our story. The statement said Mokanyane had chosen to resign after the executive committee had initiated a process to investigate issues around delegation of authority arising from the performance of their duties. Earlier this season, marketing manager Zola Nkutha left her post and media liaison officer Koketso Gaofetoge jumped ship and joined SuperSport United as their media officer. Two years ago, Zola Majavu resigned after only two months as chief executive and Stanley Matthews also quit after only a few months in the same post. »Meanwhile, heads are rolling at Safa after several employees were retrenched less than a week after the new leadership was elected. “Some of us are scared because it’s as if they are purging people seen as belonging to the other party. It is like payback time for people who were promised jobs for campaigning,” said an insider. National Under-17 women’s team coach Anna Monate and Solly Phasha, who is in charge of executive support, have been given their marching orders. Others believed to be on their way out are Bafana team manager Barney Kujane, director of junior national teams Stanley “Screamer” Tshabalala and Dudley Mpulampula, the head of fleet management. Banyana coach Jose Mkhonza has been given a month-to-month contract. Safa chief executive Dennis Mumble said there was nothing sinister about retrenchments. “I can’t discuss staff labour issues in the media, but some people are leaving because they have reached retirement age and others’ contracts are about to expire,” he said.
