On a recent evening, it was just me and my little girl Annie. She crawled up on my saddle that was sitting there on the rack, and then pulled on my straw hat. When - when she did, most of her face disappeared. And then she said, “Daddy, I want a pair of cowgirl boots.” “Okay,” I said, “I think I can help you with that.” I went and retrieved a pair of my boots from the closet, and I handed them to her. She - she jumped down off of my saddle, and with a giggle climbed into my boots. Now most of her legs disappeared! Well, she clomped around for a minute. “I don’t think this is going to work,” she said. And as she said that, something triggered, and I was carried back decades to one of my earliest memories as a little boy. It was a warm sunny day and I was very very young. I was playing on the floor near my parent’s closet. I remember warm sunshine filtered down through the window. I looked in the closet and I saw a pair of my dad’s work boots, and I thought they were the coolest thing I’d ever seen. I pulled them out, and I put them on, or rather I – I climbed into them. They were huge! I remember I clomped around trying to walk and look like my dad. But I couldn’t! – too much boot, and not enough boy, I guess. I remember how I willed my feet to fill those boots, but they just wouldn’t grow. More than anything I wanted to be able at that moment to wear boots like those and look like my dad. Well, as the years passed, my feet grew, and I was in more than one sense of the word able to fill my dad’s boots. Now, interestingly, after all these years I find myself back where I started – a child - still wanting to fill his Father’s shoes – my Heavenly Father‘s. I now know that He’s there, and more than anything, I want to fill His shoes. I want to be just like Him, and I expect just like it did before, well – that’s going to take a considerable amount of time.
