1:00 PM NEWS WITH NAKABUYE SHEILAH POWERED BY Orange Government has been urged to fast-track the passing of the National Legal Aid Policy and Bill into law to help regularize the activities of legal aid providers.Lady Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa of the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court asked parliament and the finance ministry to amplify debates and expedite the adoption of the long-awaited National Legal Aid Policy and Bill.Legal aid is the provision of free legal services to people who cannot afford those of a paid lawyer. The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Justice Irene Mulyagonja, has written to court to remove Attorney General Peter Nyombi from defending the IGG in a case where Chinese company CICO sued the government over the cancelled Mukono-Katosi road project.Ms Mulyagonja on Thursday filed the application in Nakawa High Court seeking permission to defend herself over her actions against CICO. A Makerere University don has said Uganda has no policy on national peace and reconciliation and that government should develop one to heal the wounds of war-scarred communities. Daniel Ruhweza, who lectures at the oldest university in the country, said “a clear national framework would act as an impetus to the promotion of nation cohesion and healing process”. The joint candidature in the Amuru District Woman MP by-election conducted on Thursday gave Opposition a huge advantage.
