1,000+ acres or nearly 1.57 Square Miles. Thats how large the parcel is being offered up to the State of Utah by the Miller family to relocate a prison onto. The current prison is located on 690 acres, meaning approximately 150% more land will be taken from Tooele County tax rolls than will be given back to Draper for development. This is unacceptable. Even under the assumption that the state would purchase a smaller portion of the property, the growth on the remaining land would be inhibited by the presence of the prison. There have been many suggestions on the types of development that could occur on the property, including a plan created in 2006 by Tooele County showing the area occupied by commercial tourism and retail. Greg Miller said back in 2009 that he would like to see a little village populated with progressive and ethical businesses that produce goods and services. Has the Miller family lost that vision and commitment to Tooele County? As a thought exercise, visit noprisonintooelecounty.org/ for a look at an interactive concept map of the types of businesses and get a feel for the overall size and opportunity this land represents for Tooele County. Many of the suggested businesses came directly from you!
