1-800-273-TALK. That is the number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. I wanted to get the number out of the way first, because that is what shows up first in the post, and it can save a life. It is a myth that suicides rates rise during the holidays, but this is as good as time as any to put this number in a post, as anyone can go back to this time at a later date and find it with ease. Im compelled to do this because suicide has touched me personally, I buried my sister from it 8 years ago. If you have someone you love who is talking about taking their own life, for whatever reason, this is a good number to call. They have a large database of available help in your area, and can be reached any time of any day. To any of my friends who might be thinking of ending it all, Im going to ask that you please stop, take a deep breath, pick up the phone and call someone. It could be a clergy member, the police, your local hospital or mental health center, an old friend or family member, anyone who will take the time to get you the help you need. That first step, admitting that you feel ready to end your own life, is by far the hardest, but the steps beyond that crucial step will be supported by people who find value in your life, and have made it their lifes mission to walk with you as you regain your sense of self worth. And if you dont have anyone else to talk to, please call me, day or night. I promise to talk you down from that ledge, and connect you with the mental health professionals who can help to make you healthy again. Your life matters, and I would save your friends and family from the collateral pain suicide causes. It is a pain I am all too familiar with.
