1 Apr 1 Samuel 26:1-12 Saul had 3000 elite troops searching for David (v2) and God put them in a deep sleep (v12). Most people would read the situation as “God has given Saul into David’s hands” (v8) but could this be a test for the heart of a “man after God’s own heart”? We need to be careful to read and use circumstances as a “sign from God”, in this instance, especially when it concerns a leader God has anointed. “How can anyone lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless”? (v9) David had many reasons to kill Saul (Saul tried to kill David despite no wrong done, was actively hunting David down to kill him, etc) and the opportunities to do so. David chose to trust that God, in His own sovereign time and method, will bring about His righteous deeds and judgment on the leader He has anointed. He trusted in God alone and did not take matters into his own hands by the logical reading of situations. This is an important trait of a man truly after God’s own heart, leaving judgment of leaders to God alone and trusting in God’s ways and timing fully. And David did not do it just once, to trust in God once or twice, but in the many situations he has faced, against Saul and Nabal in the previous chapter. A man after God’s own heart is not a “one day after God’s own heart” person but a “lifelong, consistent, repeated pursuit of God and His ways” person. Decide to be that person after God’s own heart today and repeat it, be consistent your whole life in it! PS: This is not an April Fools joke. :)
