1 Corinthians 3:13 ~ ...each ones work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. (ESV) What you see in the cover picture is the remains of the temple in the ancient city of Corinth, dedicated to the mythical Greek god Apollo (not the disciple in 1 Corinthians 3:4-6). Apollo was considered the god of music, poetry, art, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. The magnificent structure that Paul would have seen had 15 limestone columns covered with marble stucco on the long sides, and 6 on each of the short sides. History tells us that there was an abundance of gold and silver in the temple, as well as a bronze statue of Apollo. History also tells us that flash fires would occasionally start and destroy the poorly built houses in Corinth, leaving only the temple and the well built homes of precious stone filled with gold and silver. The people in the poorly built houses of flimsy material (wood, hay and stubble), would often barely escape from the houses smelling like smoke! Paul says in the verse up top that the works of each Christian is going to be tested in the end by the fire of Gods judgment. If we have built works on a solid foundation such as gold, silver and precious stone, those works will survive. That which we have done that is NOT of God (wood, hay, stubble), or with the wrong motives, will also be tested by the fire of Gods judgment. Those works will NOT survive (profile picture). We will survive, but some of us will smell like smoke!!! :D
