1.Demonstrate your understanding of the selected exceptional needs by clearly presenting its: Definition Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex, lifelong pervasive developmental disorders (L. Meyen & N. Bui, 2007) which include several different disorders. It is a behaviourally defined syndrome in which symptoms may occur on a continuum ranging from mild to severe. (Lim & Quah, 2004) Characteristics Each type of autism have specific characteristics or mix of different characteristics to define their condition. However, the four major characteristics of ASD includes social interaction, communication, restricted repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviours, interest and activities, and sensory-processing issues. (L. Meyen & N. Bui, 2007). Individuals with ASD have difficulty with the triad of impairments. The triad of impairments includes social interaction, communication and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour, activities, and interests. This difficulty severely impacts their communication abilities, ability to establish and maintain relationship with others as well as one’s flexibility in everyday life. (Lim & Quah, 2004) Causes Firstly, researchers found that multiple genetic factors intricately connect to form a wide range of developmental malfunctions and there is a high frequency of ASD among siblings. (L. Meyen & N. Bui, 2007) Secondly, people with ASD often have impairments in the brain’s frontal lobe of cognitive functioning, which handles executive functions such as planning and organizing information. This makes it difficult to integrate sensory information. (Lim & Quah, 2004) There are fewer cells, higher cell density, or less volume in the brains of individuals with ASD compared to a typical individual. (L. Meyen & N. Bui, 2007)
