1. I have written 5 (unpublished) books of poetry. I consider poetry my way of paying attention, coming alive, growing up. 2. My nicknames in grade school were two: “Brain” and “Polack” 3. I consider that three events in particular have been instrumental in making me “a man”: 1) My first fiance’s dumping me in 2000, best and most painful thing that ever happened to me; 2) My pilgrimage across Spain; and 3) Poetry 4. The Kotowskis were a noble Polish family dispossessed by the communists (I think). According to ancestry, and supported by my father’s rather swarthy complexion, which he’s inherited from his father, they also may have been Ashkenazic Jews. 5. My paternal grandfather really looked Polish. He changed his name more than once in order to confuse his creditors. When he died, his wife at the time was astounded to find that his name was actually Casimir Kotowski, and not what he’d told her (which was something very plain and English sounding like “Ted Wilkinson”) 6. I’m pretty sure The Apocalypse has already happened. No worries. 7. I believe that The Divine is a balance of masculine and feminine (think yin-yang symbol), but that in an even more primal way is unitary and completely beyond any category (the monotheistic mystic in me)—but what’s more (literally), all those gods and demi-gods and legends and fairy-tales depict an awesome variety of divine spirit offspring (the story-struck polytheist in me). And of course, creation itself is fully divine. Still, I really respect atheists (someone once said that they are the truest believers). I could go on…
