(1) I know Chris Hughes, and Id consider Sean and he to be friends of mine. (2) Can we just take stock here for a second, The New Republic is (a) a magazine that loses money and is basically run as a charity, (b) a magazine that was and had been dying long before Chriss purchase, which had cut back frequency repeatedly, which had a long history of declining and questionable quality, (c) a magazine that was owned from 1974 to 2002 by a man with a long history of making terribly racist statements, etc (cf. theatlantic/ta-nehisi-coates/), (d) a liberal magazine with one of the richest histories of support for the invasion of Iraq. (3) The news reports definitely suggest that Chris mishandled a ton of situations, sure, but its hard to watch him and Sean get skewered in the press and swallow the idea that somehow this is the end of TNR as a veritable journal. If only Chris hadnt bought it! (4) Frankly, the writing in TNR over the last 2 years has gotten noticeably better. (5) Im keeping my subscription.
