1 John 3:11-18 Sacrificial Love THOUGHT FOR TODAY: We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 1 John 3:16 My nephew is a US Marine. He and other members of our armed forces who are driven to serve by a love for this nation understand the connection between love and sacrifice. They are very aware that love of country may require giving their lives, and they are willing to make that sacrifice. We often think of love as a warm, fuzzy feeling. It is easy to love those who are kind and meet our needs. But there are people in our lives, perhaps even family and friends, who are difficult to love. It helps to remember that Jesus’ love was expressed by his commitment to go to the cross. Most likely, we will not have to lay down our lives, but love does require sacrifice. When we are on the receiving end of injustice, love must be a decision and a commitment to act sacrificially. What are you willing to lay down for the sake of love? PRAYER: God, there are people in my life who are hard to love, but you call me to love them sacrificially. Please enable me to lay down my ego, so that I can love others as you have loved me. Amen.
