1 Samuel 12:19 - Israel Asks For A King “Pray to the Lord your God for us, or we will die!” they all said to Samuel. “For now we have added to our sins by asking for a king.” The use of kingship in Israel was established by God. During this period of time, judges were mostly used to set forth laws and decrees in Israel and when the people started to get scared of their own vulnerability, they demanded a king to rule them. It isn’t necessarily a sin to ask for a king; however, their hearts were not right with God. They believed that an earthly king could protect them from invasion and they neglected to remember their Heavenly King. As they had done so many times before, the Israelites turned to idols instead of intercession. Even in their confession and repentance, they refused to humble themselves before the Lord.
