1 Samuel 25:18-19 YOUR ALMSGIVING Abigail prepares gifts, a large parcel indeed, and sets off to meet David. She makes a servant, not servants, take the items and take the lead. She decides to follow later and refuses to tell the husband, Nabal about it. She does not ask two or three servants to take the things that one servant can conveniently handle. She does not follow the servant for all to see her in a procession with her gifts. She discusses the offering with no one, not even the husband is told. Yes, she does not tell the husband because she is more aware of a possible discouragement from the husband. How do you undertake your charitable acts and offer your Church contributions? Jesus teaches us not to trumpet our acts of charity before us. It pains me when Christian organisations and people of good will seek media attention in their acts of donation. Unfortunately, some even buy pages in papers to exhibit their acts of charity. I also find it difficult to understand the numerous publicities involved in Church donations. At harvest time, people are hailed and praised because they donated huge sums of money. Some individuals are granted space and time to exhibit how gracious and generous they are to the Church. Forget about them and let us talk about ourselves. I believe God will be very pleased if you donate under anonymity. For instance, at harvest, envelop your donation neatly, hand it over to the table and tell them not to mention your donation in public. When you wish to make offering to the priest or pastor, it could be nicer to take it to him in private than to make a huge hamper, join the procession and display how beautiful your gifts are. The good teacher admonishes us in these words, “... But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right hand is doing; your almsgiving must be in secret, and your father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Mat 6:1-4)
