1 Samuel 8:1-5 Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king 1 Samuel 8:7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. My sinful heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, how can I know it? (Jeremiah 17:9) There is great opportunity for rebellion in an evil day, and what is in the heart, if left unchecked, will be played out in the life (James 1:12-15) my sinful desire only awaits the right opportunity. The present state of moral rot that is all around me will in no way justify my rebellion. The place to start in an evil day is within, like David the king I must come to Jesus and ask Him the tough questions: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139:23-24)
