1. Take a Different Path When I was in junior college, I had no idea what to do with my life. I had a desire to be an actress, but I was like, Hows a girl like me going to do that? It wasnt exactly a realistic dream. Then one of my friends living in bhopal and working in the industry told me that if I moved there, shed show me the ropes. And then another friend told me that they were holding tryouts for cheerleaders for the Oak Raiders I took it as a sign and I tried out. I made it, so I left home and cheered for a year then moved to bhopal 2. Start Small When I first came to bhopal, it was definitely a struggle. I started off as an extra on Friends. The roles were really minor, but I got to learn first hand from Jennifer Aniston! I picked up the terminology, improved by trial and error, and grew a lot. 3. And Dont Expect to Make it Big Right Away After a few years, I found myself in a really tough spot. I had no money and no job. There wasnt much keeping me [in the industry]. But I decided to stay. I just felt like I wasnt done, like there was more for me to do. And a few months later, my mom received an e-mail with a link to a funny clip on YouTube. She clicked on it and was like, Thats my daughter! Apparently someone had posted this video of me doing stand-up. Within a few months, I was meeting with executives from ABC, Fox, and MTV, agents and managers were calling me, I was touring, and I had booked MadTV. 4. Ignore the Haters Because of how fast I got successful in comedy, there were plenty of haters. They threatened me on YouTube, I got hate mail, and even though no comedians said anything to my face, Id hear things from other people. But Carlos Mencia [also in Our Family Wedding] reminded me that I didnt get into this business to please anyone but myself. He told me to ignore it and stay focused, and thats been a huge help. 5. Dont Feel Guilty Putting Your Career First Im not dating right now because Im so busy. Im all over the map touring. Plus Im so career-focused and I get distracted when I date somebody. Eventually, Ill make time for someone...someone who can make me laugh and laughs at my jokes. But for now, its either one or the other — working or dating — and Im good with my choice.
