10/10/2014 Hi Everyone, Today, I start posting an article from ‘The Living Document’ Volume 2 Spring 2008. Please enjoy and look forward to the 2nd part next week. WHAT IS COACHING? Coaching has grown in popularity. In the past it was seen as being related to sports, but that has changed dramatically today. This is clear from the description below. Coaching is the art of guiding another person, persons or human system towards a fulfilling future... Coaches help clients invent futures that are exciting, valuable and intensely personal. That is, coaching is used in a variety of fields. It is viewed as being empowering, developmental, task-related and goal-orientated. Generally speaking, individuals who seek out a coach will: • Want to change, to grow, to become more conscious and competent as persons • Be willing to restructure their lives and schedules Want to be the best they can be • Be capable of visioning preferred futures Value other people and be able to reach decisions through collaboration • Be willing to engage in whatever training it takes to resolve the coaching issues • Be capable of disciplined and responsible planning steps. If coaching is to benefit the client, then four progressive stages must be completed. Omitting or hurrying through a stage will result in confusion, lost direction and haphazard learning. The four progressive stages are: Stage 1: Analysing for awareness Stage 2: Planning for responsibility Stage 3: Implementing the plan, utilising different techniques and skills Stage 4: Evaluating for success. Please “Like and Share” it. Best Wishes Cornelia Tews Institute of Counselling 40 St Enoch Sq Glasgow G1 4DH instituteofcounselling.org.uk
