His heart-cry was God, show me your glory, [your ways]. Acts are observable with the naked eye. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork (Psalm 19:1). Every human being on the face of the earth, every bird, every animal can see God’s handiwork. Even the blind and deaf can experience the handiwork of God in some way. But that doesn’t mean they know His ways; they only know His acts. Quoting David, Thou hast made known to me the ways of life (Acts 2:28). The ways of life are God’s ways. When we know God’s ways, we know God, we know life. John said the world did not know Jesus (John 1:10), but that Jesus declared God (John 1:18). Jesus told His followers if they had seen Him they had seen God (John 14:9). Many people in Jesus’ day saw His acts of mercy, salvation and healing, but they did not know Him or His ways. One very well-known, often-quoted verse reveals God’s ways to us: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16). These are the attributes which define God and were present in Jesus. When we only see His acts of mercy, grace, etc., and don’t hone our intimate relationship with Him to know His ways, we will miss out on the most glorious relationship with Him. If we focus on who He is, and why He acts as He does, then our knowledge of Him will increase on a plane higher than just enjoying the fruits of His acts. We can sit in heavenly places with Him and let His ways keep expanding our understanding and know Him with the intimacy of a cherished friend who knows and understands us and whom we can know and be shown His ways. The carnal Christian only knows the acts of God. God saves me from my sins, He heals my body, He blesses me with finances, He delivers me from the crisis of life - but the Bride of Christ knows the ways Derek of God. Not only does she know that God saves us from our sins, heals our bodies from sicknesses and disease, gives us financial blessings and delivers us from the crises of life but she also knows God in a personal and intimate way. Spiritually, God not only delivers the Bride from Egypt (a type of the world) by showing His marvelous signs and wonders (the acts of God) but God takes the Bride to her spiritual promised land in life as she walks in Gods perfect Will during lifes journey. However , the carnal Christian while being delivered from Egypt (a type of the world) dies in the wilderness (the trial and tribulations of life) by murmuring and complaining and becoming bitter toward God in the midst of lifes trials. God distinguished Moses from the children of Israel because Moses knew (Yadah) the ways (Derek) of God but the children of Israel only understood the acts of God. This truth can be seen in Psalm 103:7 as it is written: He made known (Yadah) his ways (Derek) unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. Why did the children of Israel (a type of the carnal Christian) die in the wilderness? They did not know the ways (Derek) of God. In Psalm 95:10 it is written: Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart (they do not have an intimate relationship with God) and they have not known (Yadah) which means to know intimately) my ways (Derek). We may wonder that the people of Israel staid forty days for the return of their spies, when they were ready to enter Canaan, under all the assurances of success they could have from the Divine power, and the miracles that had hitherto attended them. But they distrusted Gods power and promise. At length the messengers returned; but the greater part discouraged the people from going forward to Canaan. Justly are the Israelite left to this temptation, for putting confidence in the judgment of men, when they had the word of God to trust in. Caleb and Joshua does not say, Let us go up and conquer it; but, Let us go and possess it.
