10 November 2013.11.10 03:38 saved Authors This Day.txt Authors Born On This Day: Quickey: RIP Faned Don C. Thompson (1927-1990). Patricia Wentworth (1878-1961) still popular with mystery readers. Robert Arthur (1909-1969) has a place in the fantasy writers hall of fame. Same for Steven Utley (1948-2013), whose stories fill five collections and more to come Im sure. Utley is known for writing Custers Last Jump (1976) with Howard Waldrop, and also edited Lone Star Universe (1976) with Geo. W. Proctor, another late Texan. His work will continue to inspire. Still among living is Dean Wesley Smith (1950), living somewhere here in Oregon, making a living selling what theyre buying. Also very much alive is Neil Gaiman (1960), much beloved by all including me so happy birthday to yous. Some notable names among the departed this day, they will be missed. My attention falls upon a byline known to me since 1972 when I was given some and soon bought others by both names. John T. Phillifent (1916-1976) may be better known to UK readers but 16 Ace doubles (1965-1973) and 3 novels from DAW (1972-1973) made him visable in the US mostly as John Rackham but also as Phillifent. Funny thing about doubles is the variety of authors shared [with Rackham titles] is quite a spread, so among us tiny dwindling few who collect SF paperbacks for our personal library, chances are most collections include some Rackham. Beginning with three short SF novels, Jupiter Equilateral, Space Puppet, and The Master Weed (1954.00 Tit-Bits Science Fiction Library) [only as by John Rackham ], followed by Alien Virus from same publisher in 1955. Also in 1955 reviews in the fanzine Operation Fantast, then in 1958 stories in Science Fantasy and Astounding. In 1959, two more in Science JFantasy, one in Nebula Science Fiction, and If You Wish an iconic title for the November 1959 If with classic halloween cover art by John Pederson, Jr. This issue was among those given to me in 1972. 1960 saw 5 fiction sales, some book reviews and the essay The Science Fiction Ethic to New Worlds Science Fiction, #100 November 1960. More stories, essays and reviews followed in 1961, including this one for Vector 14 Winter 1961, the BSFA journal; Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand • review by John T. Phillifent. Stories by Rackham continued to appear in the magazines but as he began writing more novels, stories became less frequent. I know only his bibliography but Id like to know more biography. 10 November 2013.11.10 03:38 saved Authors This Day.txt Authors Born On This Day: Robert William Iveniuk (0000) Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) Wallace Rice (1859-1939) Wolcott LeClear Beard (1866-1937) Winston Churchill (1871-1947) Patricia Wentworth (1878-1961) D.
