10 Peculiar Experiences From Our Vacation... American - TopicsExpress

10 Peculiar Experiences From Our Vacation... American Music Europeans may make fun of Americans, yet they love American music and movies. Every other song played on the radio or in stores seems to be American pop. You wonder how much they understand as some of the lyrics of booty music are quite graphic. Abstract Art Abstract art is becoming more abstract. Seems like with digital photography becoming more abundant that there are fewer artists doing portraits and landscape. At times I spent more time looking at abstract modern art asking myself “what is this” than I do actually enjoying it. Caveman Jewelry In one museum we visited there were archeological findings that ranged from caveman, to Roman, to Medieval times. Next to where the caveman had relics of survival like spears and farming tools, they had how they would use the local metals and mold them into bracelets. My wife astutely pointed out that even the cavewoman liked jewelry. Washing Hands as an Option? It’s common to see people in Europe come out of a stall, rinse their hands in water, and walk out. Apparently washing your hands is an option, though sometimes it’s not an option at all. At times a bathroom is out of soap and if you bring it up they’ll just tell you to go to a different bathroom. Rave Runs! I love to exercise when I’m on vacation, and running is a great way to cover a lot of ground to get to know the surrounding area. One particular mid-afternoon run in the heat of Puerta Del Sol is still vivid in my mind. The streets of Madrid were packed and the run had a Gasparilla 5K feel to it as I was weaving in and out of flocks of people, yet with the festive nature of the locals it had equal parts of a Gasparilla parade feel to it. Old World vs. New World Laundry In cities with an Old World feel to it they still hang their clean laundry out to dry outside on clothespins. In the New World people hang their dirty laundry on Facebook. Children No matter what nationality, a child is a child. They want to be held, they throws tantrums, they carry stuffed animals, they must constantly crawl and climb, and love playgrounds. As we travel we may see a playground of the corner of our eyes and I picture our children playing there. Earth Will Live There was an old man who was a Maitre D that gave me a history lesson about the buildings around the cathedral of Toledo. Later he made a point of emphasizing that just like the old cathedral, the Earth will always be around but our lives are temporary. He emphasized that he learned about his town from his grandparents, uncles, and those before him... And that it was his job to further pass down these lessons to his children, nieces/nephews, and the next generations. Scavenger Hunt We brought along Manuel’s VPK picture and we took pictures of it throughout the different sites. Later in life we’ll encourage the kids to visit these places. Currently I go through the globe with them and we learn about different countries and continents. Jet Lag I’m frequently asked how to get over jet lag... And I’ve found the best way to get over jet lag, is to just get over it. Jet lag involves fatigue, the sense of needing a shower, and stomach changes. Blah! It’s no fun, but it’s part of travel and the alternative is no travel otherwise... get over it. Love life! Love travel!
