10 Things You May Not Know About Chiropractic #6. We know about more than just your backbone! This surprises many people who have no idea that Chiropractors are well trained in nutrition, fitness, ergonomics and lifestyle. It is common for DCs to evaluate and successfully treat patients for a multitude of conditions ranging from migraine headaches, dizziness, neck and back pain, numbness, carpal tunnel, acid reflux, digestive disorders, arthritis(different kinds), fibromyalgia, leg, knee and foot pain( and many things in between). Training for Chiropractors is not dissimilar from that of medical doctors: DCs receive extensive training in health sciences, approximately 4,200 hours of classroom, laboratory and clinical training. In some areas such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition and exercise science, Chiropractors receive MORE TRAINING THEN MOST MEDICAL DOCTORS. This training differs from medical doctors because there is much more emphasis on working within the natural healing capacity of the human body. Chiropractors are also able to complete specialties in other areas such as pediatrics, sports rehabilitation, neurology, clinical nutrition, and addictions and compulsive disorders. They are known as spinal specialists because of the effect that the nervous system has on a person’s overall health, and the spine houses much of the body’s nervous system. How the spine functions directly effects how the body functions so they want to make sure it is functioning at its best! Most Chiropractors take every effort to become a part of the local health care community and interact with other healthcare professionals in their area. In many cases some of their best sources of patient referrals are from local medical doctors who have come to value their approach to dealing with their patients’ health concerns. Because of these strong professional relationships they have formed, if they find an ailment outside of their scope of practice, or just feel another professional may be more appropriate for treating a certain condition, they know exactly who can best address those needs for their patients. See the chart in our next post to see just how well trained your Doctor of Chiropractic is!
